Granite Countertops and Tabletops

Marble vs. Granite - Premium Natural Stone Choices

The beauty of natural stone is undeniable. Natural stone products add value and refinement to any space. All natural stones have certain properties that make them distinctive and better suited for particular functions. (See also quartz countertops.)

Marble for a Stone Fireplace or Backsplash Tiles

  • Marble, a natural stone formed by the crystallization of limestone, is primarily composed of calcite. Natural patterns and varying colors make for a striking presence, especially when honed or polished.
  • There are different categories of marble. Pure marble is the most hardwearing. The remaining grades of marble - cultured marble - become increasingly softer and less pristine. Pure marble is most commonly used in construction while other grades are utilized for more decorative purposes.
  • Marble countertops or vanities can be quite porous and not particularly stain resistant. Marble is also a softer stone and may need to be re-polished every two to three years.
  • Marble is better suited for table tops, decorative mantles or backsplash tiles. Marble floor tiles are most appropriate for areas that do not receive excessive foot traffic.

Granite - The Perfect Choice for Countertops, Table Tops and Tile

  • Granite is an igneous rock formed from molten lava. It becomes so hard and dense that only diamonds are harder. Because of these properties, granite is ideally suited for countertops, vanities and tiles.
  • Granite is scratch, heat, water and stain resistant. A granite countertop will remain stunning for a lifetime and may never need re-polishing. There are also many different colors and finishes from which to choose.
  • Honed granite floor tile is ideal for high traffic areas, whereas polished granite tile, like marble, may be better suited for feature rooms.
